China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity

China in the World Postgraduate Research Summer School - Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo, Norway, 21st - 24th July 2009

Financed by the European Union Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses Contract number MSCF-CT-2005-029888 and in collaboration with the Worldwide University Network (WUN), China in the World Postgraduate Research Summer School provides research training in Chinese studies for PhD students and junior researchers from EU member and associated states, China and the USA.

The theme of the 2009 Summer School is China Global: Nation State and Ethnicity. It aims to enhance the research approaches and techniques of postgraduate research students and junior researchers. The main topics include:

    * China, its minority nationalities and Greater China;
    * Theories of nation and ethnicity, and Chinese discourses of nation, ethnicity, and the foreign;
    * Cultural interpretations of social belonging;
    * Workshop on writing oral history.

Eligibility of parti*****nts:

Applicants should be either studying for a PhD or an equivalent research degree, or junior researchers holding at least a BA in Humanities or Social Sciences with more than four years of research experience in contemporary Chinese studies and relevant disciplines. It is essential for parti*****nts to have good command of both English, which is the language of instruction of the Summer School, and Chinese.

Applications are invited from:

    * Postgraduate students and junior researchers who are European nationals, i.e. the nationals of EU member or associated states, who are studying or working anywhere in the world;
    * Postgraduate students and junior researchers of any nationality who are studying or working at a European university or institute;
    * Postgraduate students and junior researchers studying or working at Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) member universities - Nanjing (China), Zhejiang (China), Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (US), California at San Diego (US), Washington at Seattle (US), Wisconsin-Madison (US), Pennsylvania State (US) Toronto (CA), and Sydney (AU);
    * Postgraduates, post-docs and junior researchers at other institutions may also be considered.

Fully funded places will be allocated according to a quota based on European and non-European categories. There are a small number of self-funded places to be offered to research students and junior scholars who have the nationality of an EU or associated state but who are not selected for funded places.

Tak, jak już kiedyś chyba pisałem: wygląda to ciekawie, ale uważam, że magisterium z "Contemporary China Studies" bez przyzwoitej znajomości chińskiego (albo w ogóle bez znajomości chińskiego, co jest możliwe, biorąc pod uwagę konstrukcję programu) to po prostu nieporozumienie... Nie bardzo sobie wyobrażam, jak miałoby wyglądać pisanie pracy magisterskiej o współczesnych Chinach przez magistranta, który nie przebrnie nawet przez abstrakt w 《中国社会科学》 (i nie mam tu oczywiście na myśli abstraktów zamieszczanych na ostatnich stronach każdego numeru).

Mam też obawę (a nawet pewność), że Chińczycy będą wciskać tym studentom jedynie słuszną wizję problematyki chińskiej. To oczywiście też jest ciekawe, ale dla młodego człowieka, który się na rzeczy nie zna i nie potrafi krytycznie odebrać tego rodzaju przekazu (weryfikując go na podstawie tego, co już wie), może to być nawet nieco niebezpieczne...
